A few signs to look for when you suspect you have a hidden leak are: water pooling on the floor, areas of a yard that are discolored (or greener than the surrounding grass), sinking areas of a yard, sudden potholes, high water bills, a moving marker on water meter (when water is off).

Conditions that interfere with the movement of water through plumbing can create sounds like those brought about by real water leaks. Examples of interference include: water usage during leak detection, external noise such as wind, rain and other weather-related causes. Since much of hidden leak detection relies on sound, these factors can often interfere with an investigation – though expert plumbers are used to (and mindful of) most of them.

What is the relationship between leaks and other plumbing issues? There are a myriad of issues that are both the cause of leaks and the symptom of leaks. Dated plumbing, hard water, erosion and/or shifting of foundation are all causes of leaks. Leaks themselves can also cause further plumbing issues including low water pressure, the rusting of pipes and fixtures and pipe bursts. A professional plumber has the skills and the high tech tools to assess the issue and make an experienced judgement on the cause/symptom of the problem.
